Survey Shows Increase in Mobile Barcode Scanning

More consumers are becoming familiar with mobile barcodes, according to a survey conducted by ScanBuy via social networks Twitter and Facebook.

The survey revealed that 57 percent of respondents have scanned a mobile barcode at least once and 40 percent have scanned five or more times. Sixty percent of consumers are most likely to scan a barcode from product packaging, often doing so to check prices, read reviews or because a sales associate isn't available.

"We experienced [a] significant uptake during Q4 2010 as a result of not only the shopping trends, but overall consumer adoption and understanding of how the mobile device is a vital tool in getting information quickly and easily while the person is out and about," said Mike Wehrs, CEO of Scanbuy.

During the holidays, mobile barcoding scanning increased by 50 percent.

IPhone consumers scan barcodes the most, with 34 percent of survey respondent's saying they used the platform, compared to 29 percent of Blackberry users and 27 percent of Android users.
