SPAM Seeks Hawaiians to Design New Label

Hawaiian residents have been invited by the Hormel Foods Corporation to design the latest label for the canned meat product SPAM Less Sodium. The company sells more SPAM in the islands than in any other place in the country, with Hawaiians purchasing over 6 million cans per year, according to the Honolulu Star Advertiser.

Regional graphic designers and nonprofessional creative designers over the age of 18 could win $1,000 cash, a case of SPAM and a SPAM gift bag. The company will choose four runner-up designers, who will each win their own cases of SPAM and a SPAM gift bag.

The contest runs through February 18 and the public will get its chance to vote on designs from February 21 through 25. A winner will be announced on April 30.

"Because SPAM is so popular in the islands, we thought it was time to finally create a SPAM label made for Hawaii," said Jen Ostervich, associate product manager of SPAM, KITV noted.

"So rather than having someone in our company create the image, what better way to have a local person from Hawaii who loves SPAM design the label instead?," she added.
