South Australia Food and Wine Producers Must Label Goods By Region

Australia has put into motion its first food and wine appellation controls, a move that was announced earlier this week by Food Marketing Minister John Rau.

According to ABC News, food and wine producers in South Australia will now need to certify the origins of their products, an effort that Rau hopes will benefit the region and boost the value of its food and wine products. The labels will feature a unified logo for each locale in order to identify where products are coming from.

"This is a scheme that's been operating in Europe for centuries and the market in South Australia, I think, is now sophisticated enough for us to kick off with a scheme like this," Rau told the source.

"We want to be in a position where consumers in South Australia … know when they buy something with a certification stamp on it … [that] the product they are buying is 100 percent from that region," he added.

Experts anticipate this move will benefit the region, as consumers are more likely to purchase goods that are regionally certified despite any added expense, The Australian reported.
