POM Wonderful May Not Be as Great as Claimed

POM Wonderful, the pomegranate fruit juice that has taken the United States by storm over the past few years, may be misleading buyers.

The brand has traditionally sold its various juices and pills under the guise that they can treat or prevent heart disease, prostate cancer and erectile dysfunction. POM Wonderful even says "Drink it daily. Feel it forever" on its labels, indicating there may be some health benefits. However, $35 million worth of research projects haven't been able to definitively substantiate these claims.

"This makes it clear why everyone should be suspicious of the results of sponsored studies," Marion Nestle, professor of nutrition, food studies, and public health at New York University, told Bloomberg Businessweek. "POM-sponsored studies produce results favorable to POM.

As a result, POM will have to send all of its promotional material to the FTC over the next five years to have their claims carefully inspected. Judges are also looking to involve the U.S. Federal Trade Commission to have health claims approved.

American consumers have recently grown more health-conscious, so many drink manufacturers — such as POM or makers of coconut water — are stressing their products' nutritional values.
