Packaging's Impact on Environment Remains Top Concern for Consumers

Consumers' awareness of and concern for environmental issues and new material developments mark two of the main factors driving sustainable packaging, a recent report revealed. According to Pira International's survey, this was the driving force behind 79 percent of consumers responding that they want to see greater environmental efforts on the part of companies.

These results complement another report released recently by DuPont, which found that consumer demand for environmentally friendly product packaging remains a top priority, Packaging Digest reports.

"Sustainable, cost-effective solutions that reduce packaging's environmental footprint are a top goal across geographies," said William Harvey, president of DuPont Packaging & Industrial Polymers. "This is especially true in the food and beverage industry, where consumer demand for products supporting health and wellness goes hand-in-hand with a demand for more sustainable solutions."

However, although consumers may believe that sustainable packaging should be top-of-mind for packaging professionals, there is little they wish to do to support the effort if packaging is not directly handed to them, other surveys have found.
