Italian Mobsters Denied Designer Clothes, Lobster Dinners in Prison

When Italy puts its mobsters behind bars, they frequently see the inside of Palermo's Ucciardone jail, dubbed the "The Grand Hotel" to inmates. Incarcerated mafia members frequently don luxury brand suits, hold high-end dinners with lobster and champagne and even attend luxurious weddings, The Guardian reported.

The new governor, Rita Barbera, is putting an end to the frivolity, beginning by banning labels such as Prada, Gucci, Valentino, Versace, Louis Vuitton, Armani, Nike and Adidas. He claims the effort is to cancel out "class differences" and inmates' attempts to show off "status, power and wealth."

Mob wives aren't pleased with the new regulations.

"My husband will be left naked," said one mobster's wife. "He only has designer clothes, and that's not because he's flashy but because they last much longer and are better quality. Why humiliate him? Why force us to buy clothes at street markets?"

Hollywood has frequently depicted life behind bars as an easy ride for mafia members with movies such as Goodfellas.
