Green cleaning brand Ecover is the first UK-based company to introduce renewable plastic packaging. Its new bottles are created from sugar cane and made into a new PolyEthylene, that the brand has dubbed "Plant-astic."
The packaging design took more than three years of research to create, according to the website Big Green Smile. Ecover will roll out its Plant-astic bottles next month on all of its lines, including fabric softener, floor soap, limescale remover and laundry detergent.
"We were originally planning to use 30 percent renewable plastic for our packaging, and although this was a huge step in the right direction, it didn't feel like it was enough, so we waited until it was possible to make it 100 percent Plant-astic and now we know we are doing everything we can to reduce the amount of conventional plastic entering the home," Emma Bennets, Ecover brand manager, told Business Green.
"We hope this will set the trend and show that it is possible to make big changes that will have a big impact," she added.
