DuPont Honors Top Brands' Sustainable Packaging Efforts

Several big-name brands were among the recipients of DuPont Packaging Awards, which honor firms that bring innovation to the market while promoting sustainability. Among the companies honored for their sustainable packaging initiatives were GlaxoSmithKline, Heinz, Gillette, Coca-Cola and Intel, the publication Environmental Leader reported.

In addition to promoting sustainable cost-effective efforts to reduce waste, the Dupont Packaging Awards also places importance on shared learning and collaboration.

"Nearly all of the winning innovations related to reducing waste in the system," said John Bernardo, a principal at Sustainable Innovations and head of the DuPont Awards jury panel, to Greener Package. "The jury could see a much deeper consideration of sustainability concerns, starting with responsible sourcing, thoughtful package design, all the way to end-of-life factors."

For many brands and companies, sustainability has become a top concern in recent years. Both Walmart and Target have launched initiatives to cut down on packaging, with Walmart aiming to reduce its packaging by 5 percent by 2013 and Target shifting its methods, such as by cutting back on clam-shell packages. Additionally, both Coca-Cola and PepsiCo have introduced green bottles made of renewable materials.
