Another industry, destination marketing, has embraced the potential of quick response codes. The industry has begun including the 2-D barcodes on storefronts, in travel guides and on their websites to help tourists learn more about a destination, receive promotional offers from a location and guide them to stores and restaurants, the website Idea Hatching reported.

"While I am [at] the destination, a [direct marketing organization] could invite me to scan a QR code from a travel guide or on a storefront sign ... using my BlackBerry, taking me to a page that shows me that I am steps away from half price lunch at a quaint sushi bar and that there is a big sale at the shoe store located in the shopping district known only to locals," the source reported.

QR codes are an effective way to drive visitors to locations and engage them once they are there. For example, some restaurants are using QR codes on their menus that, once scanned, bring consumers to landing pages featuring videos on the preparation of a dish or wine pairings to compliment offerings served at that location.
