Consumers Repackage Environmental Concerns

Environmental concerns are increasingly top-of-mind among consumers. However, a recent survey shows some issues are garnering more worry than others, such as implementing sustainable packaging solutions to reduce waste.

According to Nielsen's 2011 Global Online Environment & Sustainability Survey, which polled more than 25,000 internet users worldwide, concern over packaging waste was one of the fastest growing worries among consumers, increasing by 14 percentage points from last year.

Furthermore, 83 percent of respondents said companies must work to implement environmentally friendly programs, and while eco-friendly products are seen as a smart step, consumers indicated that recycled packaging is more helpful.

"Fully 83 percent believe that manufacturers using recycled packaging and producing energy-efficient products and appliances have a positive impact on the environment," Nielsen explained in a statement.

Beverage companies such as Pepsi and Coca-Cola have been especially progressive on this front, introducing containers completely made from plant material.
