Consumers Find Food Labels Satisfying

Genetically modified foods have received a lot of attention recently, especially the ways in which they're labeled.

However, a recent survey from the International Food Information Council of U.S. consumers may throw some water on the fire. When respondents were asked what additional information they would want to see on a food product's nutritional label, less than 1 percent said they were eager to know more about biotech-derived ingredients featured on product labels.

Consumers did have a few suggestions for updating product labels, though. According to the research, 9 percent want more information about a product's nutritional content and 6 percent want more food safety information.

The vast majority of respondents, 76 percent, said they couldn't identify any additional information they would like to see on food product labels. There is one factor that consumers noted as important to them: sustainability. However, only 33 percent of respondents said they would be willing to pay more for sustainable products.

Regardless, the takeaway message for food manufacturers is to create clear labels that explain nutritional information and safety facts clearly and coherently.
